In 1959 Jay Ward and Alex Anderson created an animated TV show based on characters developed with Bill Scott. Unlike most "children's" television of the day, Rocky & Bullwinkle was full of inside jokes, satire and parody. This made the show appealing to adults as well as kids.
"Rocky and Bullwinkle" ran on both the ABC and NBC television networks until 1964. It may be considered the granddaddy of prime time animated comedies such as "The Simpsons". Popular culture, current politics, fads and showbiz were all rich sources of satire for the show's storylines. A particular favorite for Jay Ward was Cold War intrigue parodied by Boris Badenov, the No-Goodnik from Pottsylvania.
